TRANSCRIPT: One way to make the most of your feedback is by using Generative AI tools to help you understand and act on it more effectively. AI shouldn’t replace your thinking, but it can be a helpful guide.

Before using AI, reflect on your feedback and figure out what you need help with. Clearer prompts lead to better support. Don’t just ask AI to correct your work for you – in fact, you should also think carefully before ever sharing work with an AI tool. Instead, focus on asking questions to help you understand your feedback, and to plan your next steps. For example, if you’ve been told you often make a grammatical error, ask AI how to address this kind of error.

As one starting point, AI can help with summarising your feedback, by pulling out key themes or recurring patterns whenever there is a large amount of advice to consider. Doing this can help you to find the most important takeaways, and to spot action points that you might not have considered on your own. Similarly, if you’re struggling to understand specific comments, AI can break them down for you. For example, if you were advised that your arguments should be less abstract, an AI tool could explain what this advice means using more accessible language, and provide concrete examples to help you to picture what you might change. If your feedback has highlighted a misconception or area of misunderstanding in your work, you could ask AI to generate test questions or quizzes for you to help you check and refine your understanding.AI can help remove the emotional weight from feedback, too. If a set of comments feels personal, or harsh, you could ask AI to translate it into more helpful wording that feels more comfortable to deal with.

These are only some of the countless ways that AI tools can help you when you receive feedback. Treat these tools as like having a conversation with a knowledgeable mentor—you wouldn’t ask them to do your work for you, but you certainly might ask for help with understanding the feedback, and for advice on how best to take it on board. Just like a mentor, AI can make mistakes and give bad advice, so you’ll still need to use your own judgement and be critical about the advice you receive. Used in this cautious and constructive way, though, AI can be an indispensable tool for getting extra value from the feedback you receive.
